Who Is Mark?

Meet Mark!

About Us

At the age of 16 Mark Ackermann got his start in the floor covering business when he got his first full time job working at The Billy James Flooring Company on Pembroke Ave in Hampton VA. After a couple of years Mark moved to Garfield N.J. to help out his recently widowed grandmother. Upon arriving Mark went to work with a friend of his named Mike who was working for an installer named Bob Barrett who specialized in custom carpet installations. Bob, Mike and Mark worked out of a store in Upper Montclair and it was there that Mark learned the ins and outs of installing Karistan,Sisals, Axeministers and various wool carpeting. Mike and Mark remain friends to this day and Mike curently owns a sucessful retail flooring store in Florida!

After several years Mark recruited his younger brother Kurt to join him. Mark opened up Marks Carpet Installation Service. Mark and Kurt did installations for several stores in Bergen County NJ. They worked all over Northern Jersey and Manhattan. They did this for about 5 years and then they decided to relocate back to their home in Hampton VA. Mark and Kurt  decided to become partners and changed the name of the company to Ackermann Brothers Interiors. During this time they branched out and started doing hardwood and vinyl installations. They installed for several store in the Hampton Roads area and did alot of homes in the newly built Kings Mill, Fords Colony and Governors Land.

In 2004 Mark and Kurt dissolved their company when Kurt felt a calling to move to El Salvador and work with Greg Garrett and Orphan Helpers. To this day Kurt and his family still live in Sans Salvador. They build homes for people who can't afford them and even opened a restaurant that employs onl;y orphans and at risk youth!
Over the years thru word of mouth Mark amassed a huge clientele. Mark would send his customers to member only stores like ProSource to buy their flooring and then he would install it. Mark noticed that alot of times the salesperson would sell the customer the wrong products for their needs. Mark also found out these stores pay their employees a lower wage and then pay them commisson based on how much they charged a customer for a product. In short he found out that even though these stores called themselves "Wholesale" the salespeople  were actually charging customers as much as they possibly could so they could make a better commission.

In 2012 Mark moved out of Hampton and moved to Lanexa, he knew there was  a need for a good flooring store in Williamsburg. Luckily for Mark a beautiful new building was just built on 2nd Street for the highly sucessful Velvet Shoestring. The "Shops at 2nd Street" turned out to be the perfect location. Mark named his retail store 2nd Street Floors by Mark ! 2nd Street Floors has a 5000 square foot showroom and a full size warehouse.
